How to Apply for the SASSA SRD Grant

You apply for the SASSA SRD R370 grant on the official SRD service at srd.sassa.gov.za. Applying is free. No agent, WhatsApp group or third-party website can submit the application for you, and none of them can make it go faster.

What Do You Need Before You Start?

Have these ready before you open the form:

Your South African ID number. It must be your own. The whole application is tied to that number.
A mobile number in your own name. SASSA sends the verification message and later status information to this number. Using someone else’s number is the most common reason people lose access to their own application later.
Your own contact and address details.
Banking information, if you want the money paid into your own bank account. You can also add this later.

You do not upload documents to apply. There is no universal document checklist, so ignore any website that gives you one.

Do You Meet the Requirements?

Check the eligibility rules before you spend time on the form. The SRD grant is means-tested, so income matters, and there are residence and age conditions as well.

How Do You Apply for the SRD Grant?

Open the official SRD service at srd.sassa.gov.za.
Choose the application option for your applicant category. South African citizens, permanent residents, refugees, asylum seekers and special permit holders are handled separately, so pick the one that matches your legal status.
Read the Declaration and Consent information and accept it. This is where you agree that SASSA may check what you have said against records held by banks and other government departments.
Enter your ID number, mobile number and the other information the form asks for.
Check every field before you submit. One wrong digit in an ID or phone number causes a verification failure later, and fixing it takes longer than getting it right now.
Submit through the official interface.

The official service changes its screens, field names and applicant categories from time to time. Follow what the live interface asks for rather than a screenshot published on another website.

What Happens After You Submit?

Your status becomes Pending. That means SASSA has your application and the assessment is not finished. It does not mean something has gone wrong.

Your job now changes from applying to checking the status. Do not send a second application because the status still says Pending. A duplicate does not speed anything up, and it can create problems that take longer to sort out than waiting.

Do You Have to Apply Every Month?

No. You apply once. SASSA then assesses you separately for each month, using the income and other information available for that month. This is why the same person can be approved for one month and declined for the next.

What you may be asked to do each month is a reapplication step, which is not the same as applying again from the start.

How Do You Get Paid?

Approval and payment are two separate things. Once a month is approved, SASSA sets a pay day for it. You choose how you want the money, either into your own bank account or through the other payment channels the official service offers.

What If the Application Will Not Go Through?

Work through it in this order:

Confirm you are on srd.sassa.gov.za and not a copy of it.
Confirm the ID number and mobile number are correct.
Follow the exact instruction on the screen. It usually names the field that is wrong.
If the official service still cannot resolve it, phone SASSA on the toll-free line 0800 60 10 11.
