POPIA and Your Data Rights

The Protection of Personal Information Act, usually called POPIA, is the South African law that controls how organisations handle personal information. It applies to government departments and to private companies. This page explains what it means for you as an SRD applicant, and how SRD SASSA follows it.

What Counts as Personal Information?

Anything that identifies you. For an SRD application that means your ID number, your name, your phone number, your address and your banking information. Your ID number is the most sensitive item on the list, because it unlocks everything else.

What POPIA Gives You

The right to be told what is being collected and why.
The right to ask whether an organisation holds information about you.
The right to see that information.
The right to correct it if it is wrong.
The right to ask for deletion where the law allows it.
The right to object to certain uses, such as direct marketing.
The right to complain to the Information Regulator.

How POPIA Applies to Your SRD Application

When you apply, you accept a Declaration and Consent. That is where you agree that SASSA may check the information you gave against records held by banks and other government departments. Those checks are the reason a status can come back as Income Source Identified, UIF Registered or NSFAS Registered.

So the verification checks are not a privacy breach. You consented to them at application. What POPIA does give you is the right to see what is held and to have wrong information corrected.

If a check returns a result you know is wrong, the fix usually sits with the organisation that holds the record, not with SASSA.

How This Site Handles Your Information

SRD SASSA is an independent website. We are not SASSA and we do not hold your application. When you use the status tool, we pass your ID number and phone number to the official SASSA SRD service for that one check. We do not store them, we do not sell them, and we do not give them to advertisers.

Because we do not keep them, there is usually nothing on our side for us to show you or delete. Our full Privacy Policy sets out the detail, including what our server logs record.

Protecting Your ID Number

Most SRD identity theft starts with an ID number given to the wrong person.

Only enter your ID number on the official SRD service or on a site you trust.
Never send a photo of your ID document to a WhatsApp group or a stranger.
Never share a bank PIN, an online banking password or a one-time PIN. SASSA does not ask for these.
Nobody can charge you a fee to apply. Applying is free.

How to Complain

Start with the organisation itself. If that does not resolve it, POPIA is enforced by the Information Regulator of South Africa, and you can lodge a complaint with them directly.
