1- Social Relief of Distress COVID-19 Grant (SRD)

The first grant is very famous among the people who are affected by the COVID-19 disaster and are unemployed. SASSA issued the SRD grant in May 2020 during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Millions of people lost their jobs and became unemployed during that time.

So the government of South Africa and SASSA decided to offer a grant for those who are affected by COVID-19. In 2020, the government started this grant as a temporary financial aid for unemployed citizens.

2- SASSA Older Persons Grant

The SASSA Older Persons grant helps elderly South Africans with financial support. It is for those who are 60 years or older. Applicants must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees. They cannot earn income or receive other significant financial support.

SASSA provides R2,180 per month to people aged 60 to 75. Those older than 75 receive R2,200 per month. Payments are made through banks, cash pay points, or Postbank services.

Applicants must not live in a state institution. They must also pass a means test. Their assets and income must be below a set threshold. Married applicants are assessed based on combined household income.

To apply, visit a SASSA office with an ID, proof of income, and bank details. A trusted person can apply on behalf of those who cannot visit in person. SASSA may conduct home visits for verification.

The grant is reviewed regularly. If a recipient’s financial situation improves, SASSA may stop payments. Misuse or fraud can lead to penalties and repayment demands.

3- SASSA Disability Grant

The SASSA Disability grant supports adults with disabilities. It is for people aged 18 to 59. They must have a mental or physical disability that prevents them from working.

SASSA pays R2,180 per month to eligible applicants. A medical assessment is required to prove the disability. The applicant must also pass a means test.

4- SASSA Child Support Grant (CSG)

The SASSA Child Support grant is a helping hand for low-income parents and caregivers. It provides R530 per child each month. If a child needs extra care, the caregiver gets an additional R250 as a top-up.

Only South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees can apply. The child must be under 18 years old and live with the caregiver. The caregiver must pass a means test to qualify.

The application for this grant is only available in the SASSA office. There is no way to apply for the grant online. Make sure you get all the needed documents like ID, attested affidavit and birth certificate of your child.

5- SASSA Care Dependency Grant

The SASSA Care Dependency grant provides cash to parents or caregivers of children with severe disabilities.

R2,180 is available per month to assist with your child’s needs. The child must be under the age of 18 and require full-time care. Applications are accepted only from citizens, permanent residents, or refugees of South Africa. 

The income of the applicant must satisfy certain means test rules. A medical report proving the child’s condition is required to process the application. The following items must be submitted with the application at the local office of SASSA:

• A copy of the applicant’s ID
• A copy of the child’s birth certificate
• Medical proof of the child’s condition

Processing the application may take some time. If the application is approved, the amounts will be paid every month.

6- SASSA Foster Child Grant (FCG)

The Foster Child grant from SASSA is aimed at those who are looking after children who have been orphaned or abandoned. The government provides this amount for every child in foster care: it is R1,180 per child, per month. To receive this amount, you must have legal documentation proving that you are the child’s foster parent. 

That means you need to have a court order saying that you are the legal guardian of that child. You must also be in South Africa because both you and the child must reside in this country.

The child must be under 18 and live in South Africa. You can apply at your nearest SASSA office. Bring your ID, the child’s birth certificate, and the court order when visiting the office. The process is free. SASSA reviews the grant regularly. If the child turns 18 or the court order changes, the grant may stop.

7- SASSA War Veterans Grant

The War Veterans Grant funds those who served in World War II (1939–1945) or the Korean War (1950–1953). Eligible veterans receive R2,200 per month. You must be at least 60 years old or have a disability. 

You must live in South Africa and meet the income and asset limits. Apply at a SASSA office with your ID and proof of service. SASSA may review your grant over time. If your financial situation changes, your grant could stop. The process is free.

8- SASSA Grant-in-aid

This is a grant that provides an additional payment to those who are already a beneficiary of the SASSA grants:

• Older Person’s Grant
• Disability Grant
• War Veterans Grant
