SASSA Disability Grant
Health is the most valuable asset in life. No amount of wealth can replace it. A person may be incredibly rich, but if they are struggling with a disability or illness, their riches lose meaning, as true happiness comes from well-being, not just material possessions.
That’s why when we talk about the SASSA Disability grant, it provides financial aid to those who can not work and earn their livelihoods due to their disability. This disability can be physical or mental.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides an umbrella to those who are suffering from temporary or permanent disability. However, the person should have a South African residency. All citizens, refugees, and asylum seekers are welcome to apply for the SASSA Disability grant and get financial support.
However, this grant is not a permanent support but SASSA will provide this grant for a continuous period of 6 months to the beneficiaries.

SASSA Disability Grant Application Procedure | Step-By-Step Guide
Are you suffering from severe mental or physical disability? Does your disability prevent you from working and earning for your livelihood? If both your answers are yes, then you can apply for the Disability grant for sure. You are eligible for this grant payment.
You will be happy to know that you can now receive a monthly grant of R2180 from SASSA if you have a disability. You will need to prove your disability as part of the process, though. But don’t fret: applying for this grant is as easy as pie.
All you need to do is make an appointment with your local SASSA office (or send a friend if you can’t go yourself), and they’ll walk you through the process. But for the sake of this conversation, let’s assume you went to the SASSA office yourself and found out you were eligible. What next?
1- Prepare the Documentation
Prepare all the documents you need for the grant application. You cannot apply for this grant without a medical report that proves your disability. So here are the papers you will need for the application process.
- Your ID: You need to have a South African ID, whether it is your Green Book ID or your Passport.
- An Attested Medical Report from a Government-Employed Doctor: You must undergo a medical assessment conducted by a government-employed doctor. After evaluating your condition, the doctor will certify and attest that you have a disability that prevents you from working.
- Proof of Unemployment: The grant is for those who are not employed. You need to provide proof like a job resignation letter due to disability.
- Value of Your Assets: If you own assets that have a value of a certain threshold, then you can not apply for the grant.
2- Check Yourself Against the Criteria for Grant
Now you need to check if you follow the eligibility criteria:
- Your age should be between 18 and 59 years.
- The nature of your disability should be more than 6 months.
- You should not be earning more than R86,280 per year if you are not married.
- If you are married, then your and your spouse’s income should not exceed R172 560 per annum.
- You are not allowed to be a beneficiary of other government-operated grants.
- You should have a South African ID and must reside in the country.
3- Fill out the Grant Application Form
Once you have gone through all the steps, your final step is to visit the SASSA office.
- Get inside the SASSA office.
- Ask for the SASSA Disability grant application form.
- Fill out the form with a blue ink pen.
- Ask for help if needed.
- Attach the documents and medical report.
- The staff will send you to a doctor who will check your disability.
- Now submit the report and get the grant application ID and reference number.
What Are the Reasons for Disability Grant Decline Status?
The SASSA Disability grant is mainly focused on the disability of the applicant. The grant is allocated to individuals who became disabled and now can not work to earn for themselves.
So when you fail to prove that you are medically disabled and your disability is as severe as you can not even work, your application will be declined for sure.
What Are the Alternatives for Disability Grant?
Currently, there are no alternatives for Disability grant. However, if you are unemployed, you can apply for the SRD R370 grant. This grant was introduced during COVID-19 to help unemployed people. If you are disabled but your Disability grant is not approved, you can apply for the SRD grant.
Can I Appeal for Reconsideration?
Yes, you can appeal for reconsideration if your application is rejected even if you qualify for the grant payment. You need to visit the SASSA office and bring all the documents like:
- Your ID
- Medical report (not older than 3 months)
- Bank statement
Now submit the appeal application and attach the attested copies of these documents. SASSA will check your application once again and approve it if you are eligible.
